~ MOVE II ~

Why are social media sites so popular among teens?

What are they used for?

What are their strongest assets?

To try and answer these questions, I set out for the internet and my friends' social media sites in order to contact them. I sent out six questions to four of my closest friends whom I met on the internet, and they took their time to answer them truthfully and thoughtfully.

Question 1: Overall, what would you say your general internet experience is like day to day? Is it more positive, or more negative?

Question 2: Would you say that the internet, especially on social media, is a good place to make friends? Why or why not?

Question 3: Have you ever been made to feel threatened, afraid, or uncomfortable by anyone you have met over the internet via social media platforms? Do you feel as if you have control over who you meet, who you talk to, and what content you see? Explain.

Question 4: How many hours a day do you spend on social media? What is your favorite social media platform and why?

Question 5: Are your parents present on any social media sites? What about your grandparents? What are your forerunning thoughts on adults using social media?

Question 6: In your own words, why do you think social media sites are so popular today?

What were the results?

Overall, all of my friends prove to be advocates of the internet. They unanimously said that their day to day internet experience is typically positive, that they enjoy their older relatives being on social media, and that they have never felt threatened by anyone on the internet. They had mixed opinions on whether or not the internet was a good place to meet new friends, and on average, they about five and a half hours a day on social media. Finally, when asked why they think social media sites are so popular, the most common answer was because of the internet’s communicating and connecting abilities. Personally, I agree with all of my friends’ answers except their answers to question two, in which I only ended up agreeing with half of them.
